Weight malus in 2026: bands, allowances and the shared cap
Enter the car’s mass in running order and its fuel: the tool splits the mass into bands, applies any allowance and the cap shared with the CO₂ malus.
Weight malus, new car in 2026
€4,520
on 1850 kg counted, threshold 1500 kg
| 1500 to 1699 kg · €10 per kg | €2,000 |
| 1700 to 1799 kg · €15 per kg | €1,500 |
| 1800 to 1899 kg · €20 per kg | €1,020 |
| CO₂ malus of the same car | €310 |
| Both maluses | €4,830 |
The application itself is free on the official ANTS website: you only pay the taxes.
The weight malus, officially the tax on mass in running order, is charged on top of the CO₂ malus when a passenger car is registered in France for the first time, new or imported. For a car registered in 2026, every kilo counts from 1,500 kg, at a rate that rises in bands from €10 to €30 per kilo. The example published by the French administration, a 1,950 kg car, comes to €6,775. The scale stays the same in 2027. Electric and hydrogen cars have been exempt since the 2026 budget law, with no end date. Self-charging hybrids deduct 100 kg from their mass; plug-in hybrids with more than 50 km of electric range deduct 200 kg, up to 15 % of the mass. Large families get 200 kg per child. Both maluses together never exceed the top of the CO₂ scale, €80,000 in 2026.

The 2026 bands
It works like a progressive income tax: the mass is cut into bands and each kilo is charged at the rate of its band. Kilos below the threshold cost nothing.
| Mass in running order | Rate per kilo |
|---|---|
| 1,500 to 1,699 kg | €10 |
| 1,700 to 1,799 kg | €15 |
| 1,800 to 1,899 kg | €20 |
| 1,900 to 1,999 kg | €25 |
| 2,000 kg and over | €30 |
For the 1,950 kg car used as the example on the official weight malus page, you add 200 kg at €10, 100 kg at €15, 100 kg at €20, 51 kg at €25, which gives €6,775.
Earlier scales, which matter for imports
A used import keeps the scale of the year it was first registered. In 2024 and 2025 the threshold was 1,600 kg and the top rate of €30 per kilo started at 2,100 kg. In 2022 and 2023 a single rate of €10 applied from 1,800 kg.
| Mass | 2026 scale | 2024-2025 scale | 2022-2023 scale |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1,600 kg | €1,010 | €10 | €0 |
| 1,750 kg | €2,765 | €1,510 | €0 |
| 1,950 kg | €6,775 | €4,520 | €1,510 |
| 2,100 kg | €11,030 | €8,030 | €3,010 |
| 2,300 kg | €17,030 | €14,030 | €5,010 |
| 2,500 kg | €23,030 | €20,030 | €7,010 |
The age reduction for imported vehicles then applies. A 1,950 kg car first registered abroad on 1 March 2024 and re-registered in France on 20 October 2026 uses the 2024 scale: €4,520 before the reduction, €3,254 after 28 % off.
Electric cars stay exempt
The 2026 budget law rewrote article L421-79 of the French tax code: electric and hydrogen cars are exempt, whether or not they carry an environmental score. The charge once planned from 1 July 2026 never came into force, and no future version of the text provides for it as of 20 October 2026.
Hybrids: the allowance depends on the technology
| First registered | Mild hybrid | Self-charging hybrid | Plug-in hybrid |
|---|---|---|---|
| from 1 January 2022 | 0 kg | 0 kg | exempt |
| from 1 January 2024 | 100 kg | 100 kg | exempt |
| from 1 January 2025 | 100 kg | 100 kg | 200 kg |
| from 1 January 2027 | 0 kg | 100 kg | 200 kg |
The plug-in allowance requires more than 50 km of electric range and cannot exceed 15 % of the mass. That limit only bites below 1,333 kg, which is already under the threshold, so in practice the full allowance always applies. A 2,100 kg plug-in hybrid is taxed on just 1,900 kg, which is €5,525. A 1,750 kg self-charging hybrid is taxed on 1,650 kg, which is €1,510.
Large families and the shared cap
With at least 3 dependent children, the mass is reduced by 200 kg per child, for one car, as a refund after you have paid. A 2,000 kg car normally charged €8,030 comes down to €0 for a family with 3 children.
The two maluses together cannot exceed the top amount of that year’s CO₂ scale. A 2,300 kg car at 188 g/km would owe €70,578 of CO₂ malus and €17,030 of weight malus; the latter is cut to €9,422 so the total stays at €80,000.
What the tool shows
You enter the mass from box G, the fuel, the number of dependent children and, depending on the fuel, the plug-in hybrid’s electric range or the CO₂ figure used for the cap. The result lists the amount for each band, the allowance applied, the CO₂ malus of the same car and the total of both. It covers a new car registered today; for a used import, the age reduction is handled in the full calculation.
