Occitanie, the large southern region that includes Toulouse, Montpellier, Nîmes and Perpignan, charges €59.50 per fiscal horsepower on 20 October 2026, according to the State’s official simulator. The fiscal horsepower, or cheval fiscal, is the administrative power shown in box P.6 of the French registration certificate, and the regional tax is that figure times the rate. Occitanie sits €0.50 below the legal ceiling of €60, ranking 9 out of 18. Our data date the rate from 1 July 2025, but that start date has not been confirmed at a primary source and the regional resolution could not be found; the amount itself is verified. A used 5 CV car under ten years old pays €297.50 in regional tax and €311.76 for the full certificate after rounding. The tax is halved once the first registration is ten or more years old. Electric cars get no regional discount, and no rise is known for 2027.

What is known about the rate
The official fiscal horsepower simulator returns €59.50 for an Occitanie address on 20 October 2026. The start date of 1 July 2025 in our data comes from third-party reporting and has not been checked against a regional act; we found neither the resolution nor the relevant record of decisions. Older rates are only reported by secondary sources, so we do not quote them. The service-public.gouv.fr news item on 2026 rates records no change in Occitanie this year.
Registration cost by horsepower
| Horsepower | Under 10 years | 10 years or more |
|---|---|---|
| 3 CV | €192.76 | €102.76 |
| 6 CV | €370.76 | €192.76 |
| 8 CV | €489.76 | €251.76 |
| 11 CV | €668.76 | €340.76 |
Each figure is the full certificate cost: regional tax, the flat national tax and the posting charge. A new or imported car may also owe the CO₂ and weight malus, which do not depend on the region.
Occitanie and its neighbours
| Region | Rate per CV | Used 6 CV car, under 10 years |
|---|---|---|
| Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes | €43 | €271.76 |
| Nouvelle-Aquitaine | €58 | €361.76 |
| Occitanie | €59.50 | €370.76 |
| Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur | €60 | €373.76 |
8 regions charge more per CV than Occitanie. Buying across the border changes nothing: the region of the new keeper’s home on the application date sets the rate, so the region comparison is only useful if you are actually moving.
Motorhomes, vans and motorbikes
Motorhomes pay the full regional rate, halved at ten years, but no transport vehicle tax and no malus; the motorhome page has the details. Vans add the transport vehicle tax, based on their gross weight. Motorbikes and scooters pay half the rate at any age, €29.75 per CV.
Electric cars
French law lets a region halve or waive its rate for electric and hydrogen vehicles, but Occitanie does not. An electric car of 6 CV pays €357 of regional tax, like a petrol one. The national exemptions from both malus taxes still make a new electric car cheaper to register, as the official page on certificate costs explains.
