Nouvelle-Aquitaine, the south-western region around Bordeaux, Limoges, Poitiers and the Basque coast, raised its fiscal horsepower rate from €53 to €58 on 1 March 2026. The fiscal horsepower, or cheval fiscal, is the CV figure in box P.6 of the French registration certificate; the regional tax equals that figure times the rate. The start date is verified: the State’s simulator applies it, and the adopted minutes of the regional council’s plenary session, which we read, announce the new rate from the first of March. The same minutes end the exemption electric cars used to enjoy, so they now pay the full rate. A used 6 CV car under ten years old pays €348 of regional tax, against €318 before the rise, and €361.76 for the whole certificate. Cars ten or more years old pay half. On 20 October 2026 the region ranks 10 of 18, and no rise is known for 2027.

The council’s decision
We read the adopted minutes of the regional council session, which record two measures: a rate of €58 per CV from the following first of March, and the end of the electric vehicle exemption. The official fiscal horsepower simulator has applied the rate since 1 March 2026, and the service-public.gouv.fr news item on 2026 rates reports the same increase.
The previous rate of €53 is confirmed, but not the date it took effect; no regional act we found gives it. Earlier rates appear only on third-party sites and are not repeated here.
Regional tax before and after the rise
| Horsepower | Tax on 28 February 2026 | Tax on 20 October 2026 | Tax today, 10 years or more | Certificate today, under 10 years |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 CV | €265 | €290 | €145 | €303.76 |
| 7 CV | €371 | €406 | €203 | €419.76 |
| 9 CV | €477 | €522 | €261 | €535.76 |
| 12 CV | €636 | €696 | €348 | €709.76 |
The certificate total adds €13.76 of national charges paid in every region. For a new or imported car, the CO₂ and weight malus come on top, and they can easily exceed the regional tax.
What electric car owners lost
Since 2025, French law only allows regions to cut the tax for electric and hydrogen vehicles, as the service-public.gouv.fr news item of May 2025 explained. Nouvelle-Aquitaine had chosen a full exemption and has now dropped it. A 7 CV electric car changing hands pays €406 of regional tax, like a petrol car. For electric buyers, that change outweighs the rate rise itself. The electric and hybrid page covers the national malus exemptions that remain.
One rate across twelve départements
From the Gironde to the Creuse, the rate is the same. It follows the keeper’s home address on the day of the application, or for a company the site the vehicle is assigned to. Someone living in Biarritz who buys a car in Spain pays this rate, after obtaining the tax clearance (quitus fiscal) needed for any EU import.
Ranking
At €58, Nouvelle-Aquitaine is 10 of 18 and remains below the €60 cap. Neighbouring Pays de la Loire charges €51. The region comparison puts your own car through all regions.
